Our language rich, play-based dual-language environment is designed to benefit children and families who value American Sign Language and English. Families with a wide variety of home languages enrich our community.

We prioritize enrollment for Deaf and hard of hearing children, those with Deaf family members and those whose families are dedicated to ASL, Deaf Culture and Bilingual Deaf Education.

The school partners with HSDC’s Language, Speech and Communication Clinic to provide customized support for the individual speech goals of each child.  We support hearing technology, benefiting from the lived experiences of our Deaf educators.   We value the experience of Deaf, DeafBlind and Hard of Hearing people. We value languages, Literacy, Language Access, Child Development and the Deaf community. These values and this comprehensive approach create a unique learning framework that promotes bilingualism, cultural competence, individual growth, safety and family involvement.

Reflections

Sam Sanders
Lead Teacher | Family Infant & Toddler Classroom

I was undergoing an alchemy, the fusion of two languages building a storm of inextricable synapses; I was learning two languages at the same time, learning how to think in either. It was a gift from my parents who came from a world where they were poked, prodded, slapped through phonetics without understanding what sound meant. They drew in silence through their ears and regurgitated noise that made specialists happy, a success, despite an accent that marked them as different. The world is not kind to those who have to try harder, and my parents chose to be kind. They chose to view me as a human being, the product of their experiences, and wanted to give me what their parents didn’t know to give.”

Classrooms

The Rosen School serves children from birth to age five in our Infant, Toddler and Preschool Classrooms.

In both the Infant and Toddler rooms, we provide a joyful, language-rich environment led by Deaf teachers who are fluent bilingual language models. Teachers partner with Parent-Infant-Program specialists and parents to provide comprehensive learning. We offer personalized care and foster community among parents, teachers, and children.

HSDC’s preschool runs Monday to Friday, 9am to 3pm with extended care options from 8-9am and 3-5pm.  Our state-licensed Infant and Toddler rooms run from 8am to 5pm Monday through Friday.

HSDC welcomes children from birth to 18 months to our bilingual, language-rich, fully-licensed nursery. We understand that building a parent’s  ASL skills takes time. That’s why our ASL language nest provides each baby with full access to rich, visual language right from the start.

The Toddler room welcomes children between one and three years of age.  At this crucial stage of language learning, we surround your child with opportunities to explore and absorb language effortlessly, with no barriers to access.

Our Preschool classrooms provide a strong bilingual foundation in English and American Sign Language for children aged three to five. Early accessible language—spoken or signed—is a critical predictor of positive language outcomes. These set the stage for developing world knowledge and healthy social-emotional skills. The classrooms combine hearing, hard of hearing and Deaf children learning American Sign Language and English. The teacher-student ratio is 10 students with one lead teacher and two assistant teachers. Class capacity is 12 students.

All of our classroom serve a variety of students who benefit from bilingual ASL/English learning, including:

  • Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) Children (including children with any degree of hearing difference)
  • CODAs
  • SODAs and GODAS – children with Deaf or hard of hearing family members
  • Children who use ASL for other reasons and whose family is committed to including ASL as one of their languages

Enrollment priority goes to DHH children and those with Deaf family members.
No prior experience in ASL is needed.

Curriculum

The Rosen School’s classrooms are constructivist and, play-based, inspired by the Reggio Emilia philosophy of early learning. Using that philosophy, we have developed our own framework with elements of the HighScope Curriculum and guided by Emergent Curriculum principles.

  • Learning through exploration, collaboration, and questioning
  • Intentionally designed materials and learning environment

Enrollment

Our students come from Seattle and many surrounding cities. We partner with Seattle Public Schools and other local school districts to serve Deaf and hard of hearing children, and other children with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) who benefit from ASL/English bilingual learning.

HSDC partners with the Seattle Preschool Program (SPP) to offer free or low-cost childcare to families that live in Seattle. To qualify for this program, your child must be three or four years old before August 31st. Depending on income, families have a co-pay that is paid to the City. This does not cover extended care. Click here for more information.

HSDC accepts tuition subsidies from DCYF, Seattle and King County. Some families choose to pay out-of-pocket. We are committed to working with families to remove financial barriers to enrollment for children and families who are an excellent fit for our program.

If you think your child may be a good fit for Rosen, please contact us to discuss your options, or submit an enrollment inquiry.

During the school year you can attend one of our monthly tours, happening on the first Thursday of each month at 10am. Email [email protected] for more information.
